WINNER, Large Business: Scotian Gold Cooperative

Scotian Gold Cooperative Limited located in Coldbrook, in the heart of the Annapolis Valley, is a producer-owned cooperative that has roots dating back to 1912. Scotian Gold operates on a 38-acre site providing members with a centralized storage, packing and marketing facility for fresh fruit crops. At peak times during the season, Scotian Gold employs 80 people.
Scotian Gold has shown considerable leadership in reducing waste and saving energy when marketing their fruit products. For example, the cooperative maintains their supply of 20,000 large wooden fruit bins by regularly inspecting and repairing any bins that are damaged. Everything that can be reused, recycled or composted at Scotian Gold is. The coop has even found a home for worn cardboard trays used to layer apples which are sent to Seattle for recycling.
Scotian Gold markets a renewable resource and is committed to environmental management. For this reason Scotian Gold is one of the winners in the Business of the Year category.
Murdock McKenzie, Operations Manager for Scotian Gold Cooperative, accepted the RRFB Nova Scotia Mobius Environmental Award for Business of the Year on behalf of Scotian Gold.

WINNER, Small Business: Chanterelle Country Inn

Chanterelle Country Inn and Cottages, is located on the Cabot Trail overlooking St. Ann's Harbour near Baddeck. The Inn focuses on providing guests with an atmosphere and service that helps them appreciate the best that Cape Breton has to offer.
Chanterelle Country Inn is one of only two hospitality facilities in Nova Scotia that has been awarded a four-leaf rating with the Audubon Green Leaf Eco Program. The Inn's philosophy is to make their guests comfortable in an environmentally-friendly setting. The Inn uses the latest innovations in waste reduction and energy efficiency. In addition, visitors are treated to cuisine made from locally-grown food. Chanterelle Country Inn is a model eco-tourism facility that combines environmental sensitivity with Cape Breton hospitality.
Earlene Busch, owner of Chanterelle Country Inn accepted the RRFB Nova Scotia Mobius Environmental Award for Business of the Year.
