In 2008, Peter Kohler Windows and Entrance Systems set out to find ways to reduce the waste they generate. After establishing a Green Team they hired a Recycling Coordinator. This is a full time position committed to creating and implementing green initiatives throughout the plant.
Through these efforts, Kohler had set a goal to reduce their waste by 75% before 2010 and by the sounds of it; they are well on their way. In terms of production units, Kohler has so far reduced their waste from 8 lbs per window to only 3 lbs per window. This is an outstanding accomplishment that each and every Kohler employee can take pride in.
Rick Ramsay, Chair of RRFB Nova Scotia, and Bill Ring, CEO of RRFB Nova Scotia, presented the Mobius Environmental Award for Large Business of the Year to Peter Kohler Windows & Entrance Systems "Green Team" members.

WINNER, Small Business: Stonehame Lodge & Chalets, Pictou County

Located on what was once part of the Gunn Dairy Farm in Pictou County, Stonehame Lodge & Chalets is owned and operated by the Gunn family with the help of nineteen staff. The Stonehame team maintains a commitment to environmental sustainability and stewardship that is evident through all facets of the business and is clearly demonstrated by environmentally friendly initiatives that helped reduce the solid waste they produce. Things such as:
- No bottled water for meetings/conferences
- Purchasing food in bulk food amounts to reduce packaging
- Eliminating styrofoam, plastic cups, disposable dishes, glasses and cutlery
- Composting all food waste
- Insuring guests do proper sorting by installing bins for organics, paper and beverage containers, as well as posting a sorting list for each chalet and/or room
- Introducing a staff purchase program for unwanted used office equipment
It is this commitment to the environment and dedication to a "rural, country-style quality and presentation, with food Grandma would be proud of" help make Stonehame Lodge & Chalets our Mobius Award winner for Small Business of the Year.

Small Business: Chester Organics, Chester

Owned and operated by Sue LeBlanc, Chester Organics, is a combination deli/juice bar/organic market. Operating with a strong desire to eliminate unnecessary waste, the business produces one meagre garbage bag per week and diverts approximately 75% of its waste from landfills.
Rick Ramsay, Chair of RRFB Nova Scotia, and Bill Ring, CEO of RRFB Nova Scotia, presented the plaque for Small Business of the Year honourable mention to Sue LeBlanc, owner and operator of Chester Organics.
