WASTE REDUCTION EDUCATION
WINNER! Residence Life - Saint Mary's University, Halifax
|
|
In order to energize residence students' interest in recycling, the Residence Life Office at Saint Mary's University facilitated several recycling and sustainability initiatives this year.
The first of these interactive initiatives was the "I Know Where to Shove It" Campaign. This fun and engaging campaign was a three week contest, conducted in January 2009, rewarded residence students who were "caught" recycling on their residence floor, or in the brand new Residence Recycling Centre. Students had a chance to win a $200.00 gift certificate for the Halifax Shopping Centre in addition to other smaller prizes.
Another initiative that the Residence Life Office facilitated this year was what they called the "Trashy Fashion Show". The "Trashy Fashion Show" allowed residence floors to design outfits made out of 100% recyclable materials. Each floor would then select one member to model their outfit at the "Trashy Fashion Show", where outfits were viewed by a panel of judges. The floor with the best outfit won a Rock Band 2 video game.
Each of these events was a smash, increasing awareness and participation among students from Nova Scotia and more than 40 countries around the world, and will be repeated again in 2009.
Rick Ramsay, Chair of RRFB Nova Scotia, and Bill Ring, CEO of RRFB Nova Scotia, presented the Mobius Environmental Award for Waste Reduction Education to Lacey Hughes, Kati Kilfoil and Shelley Price-Finn on behalf of the Saint Mary's University’s Residence Life team.

In 2008-09, Valley Waste launched a four month long "Clear Bags for Garbage" education program to all households and businesses in the region. During that period they used a number of tactics including: media advertising, curb side education, bolstered Hotline services, community presentations, business visits, and landlord workshops.
Between May and October, a team of four staff executed an extensive curb side education program. Incredibly, more than 12,000 households, almost half the single family dwellings in the region, received personal visits.
Rick Ramsay, Chair of RRFB Nova Scotia, and Bill Ring, CEO of RRFB Nova Scotia, presented the Honourable Mention for Waste Reduction Education to Andrew Garrett, Communications Coordinator, Bonnie Clemens, ICI Coordinator, and Dale Roberts, Residential Coordinator (Acting), on behalf of Valley Waste-Resource Management.
