Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre, which offers support to adults with disabilities as well as a program for youth, prepares more than 600 meals on a daily basis and was still able to reduce the amount of solid waste it produces by 30-40 percent. It has achieved this level through more diligent sorting, and the removal of as much reusable and recoverable material from the waste stream as possible.
Thanks to their initiative, they collected and recycled more than 100,000 beverage containers, and produced more than 4,000 pounds of rags that are sold to businesses and community workshops. An additional 4,000 pounds of wood shavings from the centre’s furniture refinishing and milling produce site are shipped to farmers for animal bedding each year. It’s a terrific success story of an institution and a community working together in a collaborative effort.
Rick Ramsay, Chair of RRFB Nova Scotia, and Bill Ring, CEO of RRFB Nova Scotia, presented the Mobius Environmental Award for Institution of the Year to Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre staff members Randy Holmesdale, KRRC Board Chair, Shelly Strong, KRRC Utility Worker, Food & Nutrition Services, Marilyn Beaulieu-Deval, KRRC Resident, Ginny Point, Director Clinical Services & Clinical Dietician, Betty Mattson, KRRC CEO, and Cathy Cantwell, KRRC Board Vice-Chair.
