East Meets Waste, Bartlett Plastics

Truro, Nova Scotia

A Nova Scotia success story, Bartlett Plastics and Precision Machining's lobster holding pen is a true example of innovation supporting local industry. Designed to be flexible and durable in cold water, the lobster pens keep lobsters separated during transport. Traditional wooden crates rot from continued exposure to saltwater, however the new lobster holding pens can withstand the elements.

Environmentally sound, the lobster pens are manufactured from recycled plastic called high-density polyethylene plastic (HDPE plastic) and rubber crumb made from used tire collected through the Used Tire Management Program. In 2003, Bartlett Plastics received funding from RRFB Nova Scotia's business development program to develop a marketable product made from recycled materials.

Bartlett Plastics is also responsible for the design of an innovative bracket used to hold wire fencing for equestrian paddocks. Shaped in the form of a horses bust, the bracket, made from the recycled HDPE plastic replaces the traditional staple brackets used to suspend electrified fences. Staple brackets can be difficult to use as they can short out the electrified perimeter and are difficult to remove when fence posts fall or rot due to the elements. Alternatively, the horse bracket can be easily hammered in and removed without upsetting the suspension of the wire fence.

Environmental projects such as these are made possible through RRFB Nova Scotia's funding programs which support entrepreneurs, business and not-for-profit organizations that develop processes or products which divert waste from local landfills.
