Fresh Start Denim Art

New Germany, Nova Scotia

Fresh Start Denim Art is just one of the many businesses that benefit from RRFB Nova Scotia’s internationally renowned recycling programs and funding for new ideas. RRFB Nova Scotia helps entrepreneurs convert waste-resources into business opportunities that protect our environment – and build our economy. If you’ve got a great idea – don’t let it go to waste.

About 3,000 pairs of jeans – that’s what Nancy Humby, founder of Fresh Start Denim Art, diverts from landfills each year. The 10-year-old company recycles old blue jeans into hundreds of new accessories, from top-selling tote bags and hats, to babies' bibs embroidered with “Lunch is on me.” These days, lunch is on Nancy, who built her business from one great idea. "I support myself; this is my livelihood," she says. With assistance from RRFB Nova Scotia, Nancy was able to get new equipment, materials and a warehouse to store her inventory.

Much of Nancy's own inspiration comes from RRFB Nova Scotia's sustainability programs. "I think we promote it more than anybody else," Nancy says about recycling in Nova Scotia, "We've got [more] technology...than anyone in the world. We’re doing a really, really good job."
