RETHINK Your Waste
Nova Scotia’s goal is to have a waste disposal rate of 300kg/person/year by 2015. In addition to recycling your beverage containers, paint, tires and old electronics, here are some other things you can do to help meet this goal.
RETHINK...
Packaging – Consider the amount of packaging that is included on new products. Less packaging means less material you will have to recycle or dispose of. If you think something is over packaged – send feedback to the manufacturer.
Single-use Products – Try to purchase multi-use products that have longer life spans and can be reused again and again.
Old materials – Find ways to use old materials for other purposes, whether it’s wood, glass, or clothes it all has a multitude of uses.
How you purchase – Buy what you need, use all that you buy to avoid waste.
Other helpful ways to RETHINK your waste include:
- Carrying your lunch in reusable containers.
- Purchasing a double sided-printer which allows you to use both sides of the paper when printing.
- Organizing community swap events to exchange books, clothes, or toys.
- Taking your own reusable shopping bag to the grocery store.
- Using cloth napkins and dishtowels in the kitchen.
- Buying reusable mugs and water bottles to reduce the use of disposable beverage cups and plastic bottles.
