2008 - 2009 Nova Scotia Recycles Contest Winners

We would like to thank to all the teachers and students who submitted entries for the 2008-2009 Nova Scotia Recycles Contest. Our judging committee reviewed approximately 11,650 entries from 260 schools!

Winning students were honoured at awards celebrations across the province in March and April, receiving a variety of prizes, including backpacks, movie passes, gift cards and a selection of environmentally friendly products made from recycled materials. Dozens of schools also received cash prizes totalling more than $30,000!

The winner of the $5,000 grand prize scholarship, Katie Shipp of J.L. Ilsley High School in Halifax, was surprised at the region 4 celebration, which was held at the Brightwood Golf and Country Club in Dartmouth. Katie's well written and thought-out essay is titled "The Complete Package: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Responsibility," and focuses on ways that Nova Scotians can overcome the use of non-recyclable plastics being used throughout the province.
